Reading Roles

Below is a list of jobs/roles that we came up with as a group. As we read the assigned chapters, each of us will be responsible for one of the jobs listed below. The jobs will rotate with each new reading assignment, so everyone will get the opportunity to experience each job at least once.

Click here to see the assigned chapters and job assignments.

  • Character Contractor - This person will post information about the characters introduced throughout the book. He/she should include all characters from the assigned reading selection. If a character has already been introduced, they should tell how the character has changed or developed. Both internal (thoughts and feelings of the character) and external characteristics (what you can see when you look at the character) should be included.

  • Creative Connector - This person will discuss connections he/she made while reading Bud, Not Buddy. They may make text to text (connections between the assigned reading and another book), text to self (connections between the assigned reading and something he or she has personally experienced), or text to world connections (connections between the assigned reading and something that is happening or has happened in the world). Connections along with a good explanation should be posted to our wiki.

  • Literary Librarian - This person will post different literary devices that he/she discovers while reading. They should include the literary device, page # it can be found on, and a detailed explanation of it. These may include metaphors, similes, chiffhangers, foreshadowing, alliterations, etc.

  • Puzzling Postman - This person is responsible for developing one or two good discussion questions about the section of the book that was read. He/She will post their question on the homepage under discussion tab, and the other students will then respond. The Puzzling Postman should also respond to the question(s) they post.

  • Summary Sleuth - This person is responsible for summarizing the chapters that were read. He/she should include a detailed overview of the plot and setting. The summary should be thorough without being too wordy (this is a difficult skill). He/She will then post the summary on our wiki.

  • Prediction Publisher - This person will post predictions of what they think might happen later in the book. He/She should use clues from the chapters previously read to help them make an educated guess about what events might take place next.
